The toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026, is worsening hour by hour . Official figures indicate over 1,500 victims, more than 3,200 injured, and thousands of families left homeless . Unfortunately, the numbers are expected to rise, as rescuers race against time amidst the rubble and basic needs. Estimates suggest a high probability of exceeding 10,000 deaths.
Faced with this terrible tragedy, the Churches of Oristano and Ales-Terralba promptly responded to the Pope's and the CEI's appeal. After an initial immediate allocation of 5,000 euros, Archbishop Roberto Carboni has declared Sunday, July 12, a special day : all parish communities will unite in prayer and a special collection , the proceeds of which will be sent via Caritas to support survivors and rescuers on the ground.
Archbishop Roberto Carboni addressed a message to the faithful of the Churches of Oristano and Ales-Terralba: "We all have before our eyes the images of the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela in recent days, causing countless victims, destroying homes and other buildings, and bringing devastation. This tragedy cannot leave us indifferent, and we wish to express our closeness to all those who need immediate support at this time. The Holy Father and the Italian Bishops' Conference, also through Caritas Italiana, have already provided financial assistance for the initial emergencies. We ourselves have sent €5,000.00 as an immediate contribution.
Given the needs that will still need to be met for a long time to come to the aid of the Venezuelan people
I declare a day of prayer in both dioceses for Sunday, July 12, inviting all parish communities, religious congregations, ecclesial movements and associations to raise to God a prayer of suffrage for the deceased, of consolation for the survivors, and of comfort for all the volunteers who work to alleviate suffering.
On the same Sunday, July 12, I invite all communities in both dioceses to hold a special collection during the festive Eucharistic celebrations, promptly sending the proceeds to the diocesan Caritas, which, after collecting all the donations, will forward them to Caritas Italiana, which closely monitors assistance to the survivors, also through Caritas Venezuela.
Of course, we will not fail to offer our prayers and material support to the many people suffering from this cataclysm. I thank you for what each of you can do, and I bless you from the bottom of my heart."
