The fake Carabinieri have struck again. And this time, their technique has been even more refined, as the two scammers who went on the rampage Thursday afternoon in the San Nicola neighborhood of Oristano were well acquainted with the habits of the targeted family.
And so, first they contacted the son of the elderly homeowner by phone: with a well-founded excuse (they told him that his car had been involved in a robbery because someone had presumably cloned the license plate), they persuaded him to leave the house to resolve the problem.
Meanwhile, around 3:00 PM on Thursday, two men showed up at the 86-year-old mother's home. They claimed to be plainclothes Carabinieri officers searching her home. First, they held the woman in the sun, then one of them forced her up and down the stairs several times, demanding her cooperation, but above all, causing her great anxiety and concern about the outcome of the fictitious investigation into her son.
Meanwhile, the accomplice had free rein to burgle the house. When the son returned, he found his mother very distressed and shaken, while everything had been stolen from the house, from jewelry to other precious objects, many of great sentimental value.
The alarm was raised immediately, and the real Carabinieri arrived on the scene and began an investigation. They are examining video surveillance footage, which will be useful in identifying the two scammers, who, judging by their accents, appear to be from Campania.
