Mario was a gift from the very beginning. With his clear eyes and his sweet face, he was the "prince" of our family. Loved, cared for, and defended, a love that never wavered, even in difficult times. Because his life also knew hardship, mistakes, and bad choices.
Words of sorrow and emotion, spoken this morning, on Easter Sunday, by Father Andrea Stara, parish priest of the Church of the Holy Spirit, a voice speaking on behalf of the parents, Cinzia and Giuseppe, and his sister Rossana, of Mario Siffu, a 32-year-old from Porto Torres, who died on Tuesday, March 24, from sepsis, the result of an intestinal obstruction.
The priest delivered an emotional homily before a packed church where family, relatives, and friends gathered to bid farewell to Mario, a prisoner in Bancali, who died prematurely at the Santissima Annunziata Hospital two days after his release. The case is currently under investigation by the Sassari Prosecutor's Office.
Now, faced with the pain of a life cut short too quickly, nothing else matters. "Mario took the wrong paths, sometimes turbulent ones, but it would be unfair to stop there," said Father Stara. " Because inside him was so much more: there was a heart capable of doing good, even in small gestures. In prison, while he was paying for his mistakes, he didn't just think of himself, he thought of others. He asked his loved ones to help those who had no one, a sign of a soul that never closed itself off."
And more words for Mario, his love for children, traces of light that remain. Everything resonates like a contradiction on Easter Day, the day of the Resurrection, when we must celebrate life but face death. "But this is precisely the heart of Easter," the parish priest continues, "telling us that death is not the end, that even when everything seems to fade, God lights a light that never goes out. " A desire for rebirth for a young man who wanted to change his path. "In recent times, that light seemed to be rekindled: the joy of leaving, the hope of starting over."
