«The Sardinia Region supports with its own funds the expenses for oncology drugs , including innovative ones». This is stated by the Health Councillor, Armando Bartolazzi, who explains: « The expenses for these drugs have grown by over 9% in 2024 compared to the previous year ».

In 2024, in fact, spending stood at 241.6 million euros, while in 2023 it was 221.2 million. "The explanation for this data - specifies the councilor - lies in the increased possibility of treating cancer with increasingly varied therapies, even if expensive, and accessible to all segments of the population through our public health system . This aspect has a significant impact on the life expectancy of patients: in the presence of diversified and more effective treatments, the disease becomes chronic and therefore fatal outcomes can be avoided".

The analysis of the data on per capita expenditure by the Regional Health System in 2023, always referring to oncology drugs, confirms this trend, with a figure of 148.22 euros per person. As for "innovative" drugs, however, expenditure in 2024 was just over 17 million, a figure slightly lower than that of 2023. In this case, the Regional Health System spent an average of 10.4 euros. «The Health Department is working to expand access to treatment with innovative drugs. We have already started discussions with AIFA to draw on the 5% fund that would allow us to increase this expenditure. Our goal - underlines the representative of the Council Todde - is to introduce research thanks to the creation of a regional Institute for Hospitalization and Treatment of a Scientific Character (IRCCS), which would allow us to make greater use of innovative treatments, perhaps discovered and produced here on the Island, capable of bringing concrete advantages to Sardinian patients".

"Intervening on early diagnosis, therefore on the timely identification of tumors, before they reach an advanced stage, remains fundamental to ensure a faster and better recovery of patients. This is the objective of the new regional Oncology Network that will guarantee a fast, homogeneous and widespread care throughout the territory".
