A fundamental step towards the protection, safety, and enhancement of one of Sardinia's most precious archaeological jewels. With City Council Resolution No. 90 of July 28, 2026 , the administration led by Mayor Pasquale Lubinu officially approved the Planning Guidelines (PDF) for the Mesu 'e Montes necropolis .

The project, worth a total of €1.5 million, is entirely funded under the 2021-2027 Development and Cohesion Fund (Action Line: "Art and Architecture of Prehistoric Sardinia. The Domus de Janas. Interventions for UNESCO candidacy" ).

The necropolis of Mesu 'e Montes, located approximately 7 kilometers from the town of Ossi along the slopes of Mount Mamas, consists of 18 multi-chambered domus de janas carved into the rock. Among these are authentic masterpieces of pre-Nuragic funerary art, such as Tombs I and II, renowned for their refined sculpted decorations, as well as Tombs III and XVI, repurposed in the Nuragic period.

The site represents a crucial step in the serial candidacy process for the recognition of the Domus de Janas as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

The project, entrusted to architect Iolanda Mele, aims to resolve the site's critical conservation issues, aggravated by chemical and physical degradation of the stone surfaces and the instability of the rocky ridge.

The €1.5 million funding includes €927,000 for restoration, conservation, hydrogeological risk mitigation, and improved accessibility. Another €573,000 is available to the contracting authority for preliminary investigations, design, construction management, and safety.

With the Department's approval, the Municipal Technical Office is ready to begin the operational phases. These will include a series of preliminary geological surveys, cleaning and weeding of the archaeological areas, and the development of the subsequent design stages (executive design), with the goal of returning a perfectly usable and safe archaeological monument to the community and international tourism.
