There is a frightening shortage of nurses in Sardinia's health authorities, and some are very unattractive.

At Brotzu, for example, staff are fleeing. "At every turn," says Nicola Cabras, secretary of the FP-CGIL union, "when an opportunity presents itself, a job transfer opens up, people seize it and look for another job."

This also happened with the latest competition—announced by Ares in November last year and closed two months ago—with just 48 positions available: 1 at Brotzu, 5 at the Cagliari Local Health Authority, 5 at the Cagliari Local Health Authority, 5 at the Sassari Local Health Authority, 5 at the Gallura Local Health Authority, 5 at Nuoro, 5 at Oristano, 1 at the Medio Campidano Local Health Authority, 1 at Ogliastra, 5 at Sulcis, and 5 at Areus.

The causes of this unrest are varied; unions have long been denouncing unsustainable workloads, poor professional development, and an uneasy working environment.

Meanwhile, Nursing Up has announced a strike for October . Regional secretary Diego Murracino explains: "Due to the overwork, professional de-qualification, and psychological and physical suffering afflicting the professionals working at Businco and San Michele."
