Not silence, but the roar of dozens of motorcycles greeted the arrival at the Church of San Giuseppe in Nuoro of the coffin of Luigi Canna, who died Monday evening at the age of 24 on the Su Pinu straight. Riding his Honda, he crashed into a car, and the impact was fatal: Canna's heart stopped beating a few hours later at the San Francesco hospital in Nuoro.
To pay their last respects, in addition to family members, biker friends and those who shared another passion with the young victim also came to the church: judo, a sport in which Luigi Canna excelled.
His lifelong coach, Paolo Manca of Judo Teiko, wanted to pay homage to his memory with a black belt in memoriam: he placed his own, which he kept for 25 years, on the coffin.
Judokas and motorcyclists from all over Sardinia were present in the church. Among the pews was Nuoro's mayor, Emiliano Fenu, representing the municipality on this day of mourning for the loss of a young athlete betrayed by his passion for motorcycles.
The investigation into the crash, which occurred on Viale Murichessa, is still ongoing: an inspection was also carried out this morning.
