A room dedicated to Renato Raccis, the first Sardinian bomber in Serie A, born on 17 June 1922 in the municipality of Trexenta, who played for Milan in the 1947-1948 season, has been inaugurated at the Milan Club in Mandas. «Passion for sport and football fandom can represent an opportunity to remember and celebrate the legendary Renato Raccis, the bomber to whom we have dedicated the municipal sports facilities and to whom we will soon dedicate a museum», said Mayor Umberto Oppus, present at the inauguration of the room.
The story of Renato Raccis is the tale of a child who, leaving his hometown of Mandas, where he played with a rag ball, after moving with his parents to Cagliari, realizes his dream of rising to the forefront of national football. He starts from Prato, before arriving at the great stage of the Ardenza stadium in Livorno, in Serie A, where, among the first fans, was Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, future President of the Republic. The last year of the war will see him protagonist in Turin with the Juventus jersey, before returning to the amaranth jersey. For Raccis it is the springboard towards another great team. A new dream comes true: that of wearing the magical number 10 jersey of Milan which will be, after Raccis, of Schiaffino, Rivera, Gullit, Savicevic, Boban, Seedorf and which is currently worn by Rafa Leao.
Raccis sets records: the first Sardinian top-flight goalscorer (a record surpassed only 40 years later by Pietro Paolo Virdis, also wearing the Milan jersey), the first Sardinian to score a goal in the derby against Inter, the first Sardinian to be watched by the national team coach Vittorio Pozzo in the Bologna-Milan match. The Mandarese striker ended his career at just 26 years old after contracting tuberculosis. He passed away in Cagliari in August 1979. He scored 51 goals in 135 games in the top-flight.
