A nylon line abandoned on the beach caused the death of a splendid female pink flamingo in Marceddì, a hamlet of Terralba.

The flamingo had become trapped in the nylon thread that had tangled from the legs to the neck. She did not make it despite the help of the Lipu volunteers and the subsequent care of a veterinarian because the line, most likely, prevented her from feeding.

The bird in distress was spotted on 6 February. A Lipu volunteer tried to follow and monitor him for a few days, then on the 9th with the help of a fisherman and other volunteers she attempted a first rescue, but the flamingo went away making recovery impossible.

At that point, the volunteers, after consulting a veterinarian, postponed the surgery. The volunteer continued to monitor him looking for the right moment to help him. On the morning of the 16th he found him motionless in the mud and recovered him immediately taking him to the veterinary clinic.

Nothing to do, unfortunately the flamingo died the next day.

"Despite years and years of experiences of recovery, not always successful, this story has profoundly marked us - underline from Lipu -. We will never get used to the terrible consequences of reckless human behavior. The abandonment (sometimes unconscious) of nets and lines, sometimes with hooks, often causes the death of birds and other wild animals such as small mammals or sea turtles. That's why we wanted to tell you this story, to denounce the phenomenon once again and to share with you the frustration we feel " . (Unioneonline / L)
