International day against violence against women: in Sardinia 18 victims of feminicide in the last 5 years
On the occasion of November 25, events and initiatives throughout the islandMostly killed within the couple, by the current or ex partner, or by another relative or acquaintances. These are some of the information released by Istat which published data on victims of feminicide in 2021, and today the international day against violence against women is celebrated all over the world.
A phenomenon that does not spare Sardinia even if it is not positioned among the first regions in Italy in terms of number of crimes: in the lead are Liguria, Emilia Romagna, the Provinces of Bolzano and Trento, to which are added Lazio and Abruzzo.
On the island, the last case on the sad list is that of Capoterra where Slobodanka Metusev, 48, died after being hit by 18 stab wounds inflicted by her partner Stevan Sajn, 50, in the shelter that had housed the couple for about a month and a half. Today a march takes place in Capoterra that starts from Piazza Municipio and arrives in Piazza Loiri.
In the last 5 years there have been 18 victims of feminicide, three in 2022 alone: the 5 February Daniela Cadeddu was killed in Zeddiani; on March 30 in Porto Torres Liliana Caterina Mancusa ; on November 6 in Capoterra Slobodanka Metusev . A third (33%) are foreigners, the perpetrators in 13 cases were partners or exes, in the other 5 relatives.
About 40% of feminicides were registered in the Municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari: 7 victims. Then six in Sassari, two in Oristano, two in Southern Sardinia and one in Nuoro .
From what emerges from the Istat report, in the first quarter of 2022 194 calls were received to the public utility number against violence and stalking, 1522 , 128 from Cagliari, 8 from Carbonia-Iglesias, 4 from Medio Campidano, 6 from Oristano, 16 from Nuoro, none from Ogliastra, 24 from Sassari and 8 from Olbia Tempio.
Since 2018, only 59 women who have left anti-violence centers and shelter homes have received the freedom income in Sardinia, the support measure to allow an independent life away from danger. Too few, according to what ActionAid denounces with the report "Rights in the balance": 2.7 million euros allocated by the Region are insufficient to cover the requests.
It is true that the island was the first region to adopt an income support measure in 2018 aimed precisely at women escaping violence with a monthly subsidy of 780 euros (even higher, for example, when there are minors or disabled people) . Since then, 108 women have applied for it, but only 59 have benefited.
Many initiatives scheduled for today in numerous Sardinian municipalities: the Town Halls will turn red, in Cagliari a flash mob is planned on the Bonaria staircase and an initiative by the State Police in Piazza Garibaldi.
"There is still a long way to go - said the president of the Region, Christian Solinas - but violence can be fought by offering the victims an alternative, through a network of protection and assistance that accompanies them on a path of emancipation and liberation " .
The Region, the governor says, has doubled the funding for structures such as shelters and anti-violence centers, which are having to deal with a significant increase in requests for help (2 million euros against the million of the previous year): "The regional table for the coordination of the network against gender-based violence is already working to strengthen the support network for the protection of victims, but also to promote initiatives to raise awareness among citizens".
«Every year - adds the Councilor for Planning and Employment, Giuseppe Fasolino - on November 25th we are confronted with pitiless data that remind us that feminicide is everyone's problem, a social emergency . A day of awareness is not enough, because every three days a woman is killed at the hands of a man. The commitment of the institutions and the awareness of citizens must continue and increase in order to build a culture that strongly rejects any type of mistreatment of women. Because the fight against violence is a responsibility of all of us".
