It was a scorching day, yet another, for Sardinia, not only because of the high temperatures but also because of the sixteen fires that, in just a few hours, put the regional fire prevention system under pressure.

Five of these fires proved to be particularly dangerous, requiring the intervention of the Region's air fleet .

From the north to the south of the island, men and vehicles worked tirelessly to contain the flames, often fueled by the wind and environmental conditions favorable to the spread of the fire. Among the most affected areas, Olbia, Luras, Posada, Assemini and Bonorva.

One of the most delicate scenarios occurred in the countryside of Olbia, where an interface fire – that is, near homes – required a massive intervention . Coordinated by the local forestry station and supported by a helicopter that took off from Anela, volunteers, barracelli, Firefighters and Fo.Re.STAS teams went into action. The fire was put out around 4 pm, avoiding worse consequences in a particularly exposed area.

In Luras, in the Pasadolza area, the flames attacked several hectares of wooded and bushy pasture. Here the coordination was entrusted to the Calangianus forestry station, with air support from the Cfva base in Limbara. Also on site were three Fo.Re.Stas teams and volunteers from Tempio. The fire was extinguished from above by 5:30 p.m., but on the ground the clean-up operations continue.

More contained but still dangerous is the fire that broke out in the countryside of Posada, on an agricultural area. The operations were led by the forestry personnel of Siniscola, with a helicopter from Farcana and the local Fire Brigade. The flames were tamed around 16:30, but here too the teams remain operational to avoid re-ignition.

The flames that have been burning for hours in the countryside of Assemini are worrying, where the fire has attacked an area of uncultivated land . The forestry teams of Uta are working on site, together with a helicopter from Pula, volunteers from Capoterra and Assemini, the Carabinieri and the Fire Brigade of Cagliari. The intervention is still ongoing and the situation remains under monitoring.

The most complex of the fires was reported in Bonorva, in the Sa Camba Noa area, where the flames affected hectares of dry pastures. An impressive device was on site: forestry stations from Bonorva and Sassari, the Gauf unit and three helicopters – including the Superpuma from Alà dei Sardi – in addition to the Barracelli and Fo.Re.STAS. The operations are still ongoing, made difficult by the vastness and morphology of the terrain.
