A cry of pain breaks the silence in via Tiziano on a morning that must have been like all the others. Tarcisio Piras, 86, was crossing the street at the corner with Via Napoli when he was suddenly hit by a Toyota Aygo driven by an eighty-year-old.

The impact should have been mild, it seems that the car was not racing, in that central point of the city a stone's throw from a school. But it was enough to make Piras fall to the ground and he hit his head violently. His condition immediately seemed very serious. Transported to the Brotzu hospital with a red code, he died in the evening.

The fact

It happened on Tuesday at 10.30. The thud drew several people to the street who alerted the rescue. Two 118 ambulances and local police officers arrived on the scene and carried out the surveys and heard witnesses to reconstruct what happened.

At that intersection there are no pedestrian crossings, but the dangers - at least on paper - are not many. The ambulance crew arrived on the spot and found that Piras's conditions were very serious. He was still breathing, but he had lost consciousness, and in the meantime the son of the man who was hit arrived at the scene of the accident and found himself in front of a scene that he never wanted to see.

At 1 pm the hospital bulletin spoke of very serious injuries. They were hours of anxiety and waiting, lived with the hope that Piras could recover in some way, that his strong temper would help him to win even that ugly joke that fate had played on him. Instead at 6 pm his heart stopped beating.

The dangers

It is yet another accident in the city to the detriment of pedestrians, even fatal. Going around the streets is becoming more and more dangerous, whether crossing on the strips or outside. For this reason, the local police have strengthened controls in the most at risk points.

Starting from viale Colombo, where the average is almost one accident a day. Many do not stop at the pedestrian crossing to give priority to those who cross. Drivers often drive by talking on the phone or even texting. For this reason, agents are often present in the area and also help people to cross. Another high-risk point is the intersection between via Marconi and via Porcu, where visibility is also often reduced due to the cars parked in the curve. It doesn't go better on the coast: in via Leonardo da Vinci a pedestrian was hit while crossing the strips. A big helping hand instead gave the double stops made in some streets in the center. At all those points in a year there was not even an accident, whereas the clashes were the order of the day. A stratagem devised by the Traffic and Traffic Office that has improved the situation by inducing us to slow down.
