"At this time, no further information is available regarding the cause of the strong odor reported in the Cagliari metropolitan area , which is still under investigation. The relevant authorities are continuing to monitor the situation."
This is what engineer Mauro Merella, director general of the Civil Protection Department , said about the strong smell of gas that has been noticeable in Cagliari and its hinterland since yesterday and which yesterday triggered the precautionary evacuation of the Marino hospital.
Even today, reports are coming in from all the neighborhoods and even from the municipalities of the Province.
The firefighters and the specialized NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological) unit continue their relentless work, having spent hours combing the area for the possible source of the odor that continues to permeate the metropolitan area. There are plenty of hypotheses, but at this time, there is no definitive explanation.
The involvement of the main gas storage and distribution companies has already been ruled out, as they have not reported any anomalies in their plants .
Meanwhile, the Fire Brigade continues to reassure the public: "We are far from the danger levels associated with flammability or explosive fields."
