She returned to Decimomannu to vote . And it matters little that there were 1000 kilometers separating her from her hometown. Age is also secondary: for Mercede Porcu his 89 years were not a problem. Her journey, told in an article published on Unionesarda.it , reached Nova Gorica, where a local newspaper read and translated the piece, to share with readers the extraordinary story of the almost centenarian.

The woman, without saying anything to her children and grandchildren, took a plane and a taxi and returned home, collected her ballot paper and showed up at the polling station to vote. All in great secrecy, so much so that she was reported missing from the country. What pushed her into the undertaking was the letter she received from the mayor Monica Cadeddu, in which she was invited to cast her vote. «And here I am», explained Porcu, who had been missing from Sardinia for 25 years .

Born in Decimomannu in 1926, she married a Slovenian soldier from the Sassari Brigade musical band. After the first years spent in the Municipality and the birth of his first child, the time came to leave for the border between Friuli and Slovenia, where he still lives.
