A day of mourning, in Fonni but throughout Sardinia , for the last farewell to Michele Coinu, 21 years old, Lorenzo Figus, 17, Marco Innocenti, 18, and Michele Soddu, 22 , who died on the evening of Wednesday 30 October in a tragic accident on provincial road 69. The funeral is scheduled for 3.30 pm in the church of Santa Maria dei Martiri.

Inseparable friends since childhood, passionate about football and horses, and all employees of a cheese and cured meat company, Le Fattorie del Gennargentu, they were supposed to meet here on Wednesday evening for a dinner with friends and colleagues. But they never made it to that convivial meeting.

Their young lives were shattered on the mountain road they were traveling together in a red Fiat Punto . At a bend, the car went straight and ended up in a ditch: the hood was blown off by the branch of a large oak tree and the bodies were thrown outside. They found them like this around midnight, the rescuers who had been looking for the boys since about 8 pm. At the exact point where the car went off the road, no signs of braking were found.

The alarm was raised by parents, worried about not having seen their children return home. The incident dates back to 5:30-6:00 PM yesterday afternoon.

The four boys were last seen in town around 5:00 p.m. After finishing their work shift around 2:30 p.m., they decided to take a trip to Fonni and accompany one of them to look after some pigs on a nearby farm, before returning to the company for the previously agreed upon dinner. There was no news of them since the evening: no one had seen them at Le Fattorie, a dairy owned by the family of the mayor of Fonni, and president of Anci Sardegna, Daniela Falconi, and none of their parents had seen them return home. Cell phones were silent from 8:30 p.m. At that point the entire town, including the mayor, joined the police in the search. And just before midnight the tragic discovery of the bodies.

Unanimous mourning in the town of Barbagia, which has proclaimed a day of mourning for today. But also in other nearby towns.

In Desulo , where the kids were expected at the “La montagna produces” demonstration, flags were already at half-mast in the town hall yesterday.

And yesterday evening, around 8pm, tears and mourning at the torchlight procession organised in Fonni by the parish priest Don Luciano Monni .

Meanwhile, controversy is mounting over the poor safety of the road : provincial road 69, which leads from Fonni to the Caravai pass, is a strip of asphalt with no guardrails.
