The hijacking of two planes that were supposed to land in Cagliari this morning , but were diverted to Olbia and Alghero due to fog, is believed to be due to the malfunction of the so-called ILS (Instrument Landing System). This system allows planes to land in low-visibility conditions, such as very thick fog.

According to what we learn from the aeronautical Notams , the notices for pilots, it is estimated that the system at the Cagliari-Elmas airport will not be active until April 30 .

This morning's disruptions weren't limited to Cagliari. Two other Ryanair flights, both arriving at 7:10 a.m. in Alghero from Bologna and Barcelona , landed in Olbia. Passengers will now be unable to reach the Sardinian capital and the Catalan city on the airline's buses. Delays to the low-cost carrier's flights from Alghero to Bologna and Barcelona are inevitable.
