Eight cell phones hidden inside the cells. The discovery was made during an extraordinary search carried out by the penitentiary police in the Uta prison: an operation that came at the culmination of a complex investigative activity still in progress. The devices were seized and the investigation continues to discover who took them and what use was made of them.

The results of the checks were made public by the general secretary of the Uil Pa penitentiary police , Michele Cireddu, who took the opportunity to emphasize "the serious problem of overcrowding" that afflicts the Ettore Scalas prison: "The percentage of occupancy is unsustainable. We welcome the action undertaken by the new superintendent, who is finally starting a process of evacuation of the institute", he underlined, "through the enhancement of the three agricultural colonies present in Sardinia. Sending prisoners from Cagliari and Sassari to these facilities represents an important first step".

But that's not all: "We strongly hope that the department will not send more prisoners from the Peninsula," warns Cireddu, "because this would lead to a situation of real explosion of the Sardinian institutions. In this sense, Sardinian politics must also make itself heard and demand that legality be guaranteed in the penitentiary institutions of our region, both for the operators and for the prisoners. Such a high percentage of overcrowding, "combined with the chronic lack of organic staff of the Penitentiary Police, represents a further and very serious risk for the safety of workers, exposing them to administrative and criminal liability," concludes the trade unionist.
