Sardinia is confirmed, also in 2022 , as the Region with the fewest earthquakes in Italy .

There were 16,302 earthquakes recorded last year in Italy and in the neighboring areas by the National Seismic Network: an average of 44 tremors a day , almost one every half hour . The data are those of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv).

The most important seismic sequence took place in the Marche region , off the coast of Pesaro: it started on the morning of November 9 with two earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 and 5.2, in less than two months it counted about 740 events .

As in 2021, the strongest earthquakes were located outside the Italian territory or at sea . Seismic events of magnitude 5.0 or greater occurred in Algeria , Bosnia and the Gulf of Policastro in the Tyrrhenian Sea . The 2022 numbers are slightly higher than those of 2021, stable at around 16,000 since 2019 . Instead, they are down compared to the previous years , 2016, 2017 and 2018, remembered for the seismic sequence in central Italy that began on 24 August 2016 ( Amatrice-Norcia Visso ).

On 13 October 2022 in Calabria , on the Ionian coast in the province of Catanzaro , the strongest earthquake of the year was recorded, with a magnitude of 4.3. Sicily , on the other hand, is the Region that has recorded the most earthquakes with a magnitude equal to or greater than 2.0: 184. If we also count the very small ones of 2.0, the primacy would be conditioned by the density of the seismic network and would go to Marche and Umbria .
