Respiratory failure is believed to be the cause of death for the 4-month-old baby who died Monday evening at his home in Settimo San Pietro.

This is what emerged from the initial analysis of the three-hour autopsy performed at Cagliari's Brotzu Hospital by coroner Roberto Demontis. The Cagliari Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the autopsy, which has opened a case of manslaughter, with the newborn's mother being investigated as a matter of course.

From an initial reconstruction of the domestic accident , the child rolled and fell between the bed and the bedside table in his parents' bedroom , thus remaining trapped between the two pieces of furniture.

Attorney Gianluigi Poddighe of the Sassari court, representing the mother, has reserved the right to appoint his own consultant. Meanwhile, today the Carabinieri concluded their questioning of the family, and the lawyer himself announced that the child's mother and the entire family "are shocked" by their child's death.
