Almost non-existent rain, high temperatures and increased water consumption by residents and tourists. This is the summer mix that for years has put the capacity of Sardinian reservoirs to the test to provide for all the needs of the countryside and for drinking. The latest bulletin from the Basin Authority shows that the artificial dams of the island are 56.8% full (i.e. they contain 1137.14 million cubic meters of water) as of June 30 of this year, over one percentage point less than the levels of 2024 (57.4% and 1048.06 million cubic meters) and -6% compared to May 2025 (62.3%) when the basins contained 1037.23 million cubic meters.
The water crisis is being felt almost everywhere, from North to South of Sardinia, but it is worse in Sulcis, where the emergency level has been triggered in Alto Cixerri for the Punta Gennarta and Medau Zirimilis reservoirs , which are at 15.1% of their capacity. It is not better in the Basso Sulcis water system either, where the Monte Pranu reservoir has reached 17.6% of its capacity.
The situation in the north-western sector and in particular in Nurra is also problematic . The Cuga reservoir reaches 10.6% of its maximum permitted capacity, while the Bidighinzu reservoir reaches just 1.1%.
Gallura remains a happy island where the Liscia is flat at 67.7%, while the last spring rains have saved the season in Nuoro where the Pedra and Othoni reservoir on the Cedrino registers 81.2% filling. Good also in Ogliastra with 95.9% of the reserves .
