«The total ban on cattle movements leaving Sardinia is a disproportionate measure, not supported by scientific evidence, and with very serious economic effects for farmers» .
This is what we read in a question to Health Minister Orazio Schillaci regarding the measure adopted for 15 days following the new outbreaks of nodular bovine dermatitis (lumpy skin disease) recorded in Sarrabus.
The statement was signed by Sardinian Democratic Party Secretary Silvio Lai, along with Democratic Party MPs , who explained: "The Ministry's own communication shows that the outbreak is localized and that the standard measures required by European legislation are based on 20-kilometer protection zones and 50-kilometer surveillance zones. Despite this, the decision was made to lock down the entirety of Sardinia, without a clear technical or scientific rationale." Hence the opposition to a decision that, they emphasize, "risks transforming a localized health problem into a regional economic crisis , particularly affecting Northern Sardinia and Gallura, areas heavily oriented toward exporting livestock to fattening centers on the peninsula."
The question also emphasizes that "vaccination coverage on the island exceeds 98% , a factor that significantly reduces the risk of the disease spreading and which should have led to more targeted and proportionate measures."
Francesco Sgarangella, director of the Veterinary Prevention Service of Northern Sardinia , also spoke about the importance of vaccinations in livestock farming, explaining to Videolina that "the vaccine is the only weapon to fight the virus."
