The case of the abandoned washing machine in Piazza Matteotti , in front of Palazzo Bacaredda, has become a political battleground in Cagliari. Francesca Mulas, president of the City Council's Ecology and Environment Committee, intervened, dismissing the center-right's sarcasm. "Cagliari has a free bulky waste collection service," Mulas emphasized. " Whoever abandoned the appliance could have contacted them instead of leaving it in the middle of the square . Now, residents who have paid their TARI tax will have to pay for its disposal."
The president also takes the opportunity to recall a previous criticism of the center-right's policies: " When we talk about waste transformed into works of art, some seem to forget the nativity scene made with 45,000 plastic bottles filled with water , commissioned by the Truzzu administration in Piazza Galilei and costing the municipality 36,000 euros."
The washing machine, in addition to representing a problem of urban decorum, thus became a symbol of the conflict between the majority and the opposition. Corrado Meloni, regional councilor for the Brothers of Italy party, called it "the emblem of the failed management of the Zedda administration," ironically speculating that it could be "a work of modern art or a new Social Policy service."
