Containers to expand Uta prison? The Guarantor: "It would be a tragedy."
Controversy surrounds more than just the transfer of 92 inmates to the 41 bis prison system. Irene Testa: "The Nordio Plan is unsustainable. And 300 officers are exhausted for nearly 700 inmates."Per restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
«Following the news of the 92 inmates who will enter the Uta prison under the 41 bis regime , there is now concern that the facility could be expanded with container modules, foreseen in Minister Nordio's prison plan, which would add drama to the drama».
Thus the regional guarantor for persons deprived of personal liberty Irene Testa raises a new alarm for the Uta prison.
"The situation is unmanageable," Testa writes, "and during my visit to Uta prison two days ago, I noted that there were 685 inmates and 140 prison officers for the entire facility, exhausted from shifts and forced to work in the heat in the sections . Excluding this summer vacation period , 314 full-time officers are on duty, compared to the 394 required by law . There are no cells available to accommodate critical situations. There is no one to provide medications to the inmates. There is a shortage of doctors and personnel of all kinds."
Testa finds it unthinkable to decide to house more inmates at Uta. And the Guarantor is deeply concerned about the prospect of a new "prison architecture": "Minister Nordio's plan, rather than focusing on the redevelopment of the facilities, seeks to create a container prison unsuitable for the needs of the people, with no regard for humanity whatsoever."
Meanwhile, regarding the possible transfer of other 41-bis prisoners to Sardinia, Governor Alessandra Todde announced that she had already written to Minister Nordio on June 18th to express her concerns. However, Todde explained, "there has been no response from the Minister of Justice. No opportunity for discussion. But Sardinia," the regional president concluded, "cannot and must not be treated as a laboratory for dangerous experiments ."
