"We were aware of the woman's state of discomfort and already in 2015, after her hospitalization for mental problems, we had filed a request to have her declared incapable of understanding and wanting, but the request was rejected because the woman presented a medical certificate which declared her suitable for the custody of her daughter».

This is what Filippo Cogotti explains, a lawyer who protects Piero Carta , the father of Chiara , the 13-year-old girl killed on Saturday afternoon by her mother Monica Vinci, 52, in Silì , near Oristano .

From what we learn, the girl - hit by at least 20 blows with a box cutter and then strangled with a smartphone charger cable - lived with her mother after her parents separated. But recently, due to some signs of mental distress manifested by the woman, she had become closer to her father's family .

Chiara, Cogotti continues, «had approached her father again and it was our intention, in April, when the terms for the divorce would have expired, to present a new custody application. But there is also something else: when Chiara turned 14, next March 24, she could have expressed her preference before the judge and decided whether to stay with her mother or with her father ».

A scenario that could help clarify the motive for the atrocious crime: Monica Vinci, aware that she could soon lose her daughter, her maintenance allowance and her home, may have decided to kill Chiara and end it by jumping from the window of home .

Attempt, the latter unsuccessful, in fact the woman survived and, while the investigations continue, she is still hospitalized in serious conditions at the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari.

Today in Silì a requiem mass in memory of the young woman killed.
