It was the eve of the Sartiglia, when on February 18, 2023, the carefree spirit of a thirteen-year-old girl was violently shattered . Today is the day after the Sartiglia, and by a strange twist of fate, exactly three years after the tragedy, the trial for the death of Chiara Carta, from Sili, has begun.
Before the judges of the Cagliari Court of Assizes, Monica Vinci, 54, was present in the courtroom alongside her defense attorney Gianluca Aste. Prosecutor Valerio Bagattini requested the hearing of his expert witness, Stefano Ferracuti (a professor at Sapienza University of Rome), who in his report argued that the mother was semi-infirm (and therefore partially responsible). Attorney Anna Paola Putzu (civil plaintiff for Piero Carta, the girl's father) also supported the request. Defense attorney Gianluca Aste, however, opposed the request, arguing that the expert should have made his statement during the preliminary hearing (whereas on that occasion he had merely submitted a written report). The Court ultimately granted the prosecutor's request, but in addition to the expert, other experts will also be heard: Professor Maurizio Marasco, expert witness for Judge Federica Fulgheri of the Oristano Court, and Professor Giampaolo Pintor, defense attorney. Both agree that Monica Vinci was completely infirm at the time of the tragedy. Both recall the illnesses the woman suffered from in the past and insist that she was a danger to herself and others. The trial has been adjourned until March 11.

THE INVESTIGATION – According to the investigation, the 54-year-old had been suffering from severe personal distress for some time. She had been undergoing treatment in the past, but the distress worsened again, leading to the tragedy of February 18, 2023, in the house on Via Martiri del Risorgimento in Silì, when the woman stabbed her daughter several times and then attempted an extreme act by jumping out of the window.
An endless drama for a young life cut short, for the father Piero Carta and his family and on the other hand for a mother, who lives with the very heavy burden of what she has committed.
