A few months ago, I had a problem with my hemoglobin and learned firsthand about the shortage of blood donations. Once I recovered, I promised myself I would do my part, and even though my health doesn't allow me to be a donor, I decided to take the front lines to promote this important initiative. These are the words with which Andrea Deiana, president of NABA, the association in Carbonia that fights for the removal of architectural barriers, explained when the idea was born that, in recent days, led NABA members to participate in a fundamental step for the good of the community: donating blood.
The gesture— "It wasn't an extraordinary event, just ordinary people willing to do something extraordinary," the members write—"we chose to start the day at the Carbonia-Iglesias Transfusion Center to give our contribution and send a clear message: every drop of blood can be life for someone. Donating blood is a simple act, but of immense value. Often, a few minutes are enough to perform a gesture that can make the difference between life and death for someone. Behind every blood bag donated is a person receiving hope, strength, and life." Not everyone, like Andrea Deiana, was able to donate: "Many of us have health problems," the NABA president points out, "and yet we wanted to be there anyway, a symbolic gesture that we believe is very important." One after another, they came in to speak with the healthcare staff and made themselves available: "Donating blood makes me so proud," says Patrizia Casu, "especially in this time of severe shortage, given that during the summer months, unfortunately, there is often a drop in donations." Giorgio Santoru, also a member of the association, who went to the blood transfusion center to do his part, agreed: "We are here confident that we are doing the right thing for everyone," he said. "I believe that promoting donation is a very important gesture: those who can donate should do so." Katiuscia Pani, a member of the association's board of directors, who donated blood at the same time as Patrizia and Giorgio, echoed this sentiment: "Many people need blood, but donations are scarce," she said. "You just need to be over 18 (up to 65) and weigh more than 50 kilos. Of course, to get information and find out if you can do your part, just go to the blood transfusion center, and the staff will be ready to provide all the necessary information."
The hospital – Applause and thanks from the Sulcis Local Health Authority were not long in coming: "We are facing a challenging time in terms of donations," explains the Local Health Authority management. "The donation rooms remain empty for days, and the demand for blood is constantly increasing. This is why NABA's gesture is moving us, and we hope it will promote a culture of donation." Each donor receives free health checks, and, in the words of NABA, "the knowledge of having done something great."
