«Doing chemotherapy at the Giovanni Paolo II hospital in Olbia is becoming too complicated and difficult for the oncological patients of Gallura. The most serious aspect is the shortage of beds which does not allow all patients to rest while undergoing treatment: in fact, there are only eight beds in the ward compared to the 20/25 patients who access it every day . This means that more than half of the patients are forced to undergo chemotherapy in conditions of discomfort and which do not allow maximum serenity during such a delicate moment. The inconvenience begins right from the entrance to the hospital, since the line to access the Oncohematology department is very long, to the point that patients can even wait for hours standing up » . This is the complaint of the group leader of the M5s, Roberto Li Gioi .
«The critical issues of Gallura health care are now countless - he continues - and also concern the timing for the withdrawal of laboratory reports . However, the histological examination report absolutely cannot be delivered late, as is the case instead, because every day of waiting contributes to exposing the patient to the risk of a worsening of his clinical picture ».
«I understand that in Olbia - adds Li Gioi - the results of the histological tests are even three weeks late , and since neither radiotherapy nor chemotherapy can be started without them, the times must necessarily be reduced. Because while healthcare delays, the disease goes on ».
«We cannot forget that cancer patients are extremely fragile and that allowing them to rest on a bed while they undergo treatment must be a guaranteed right for everyone. Furthermore, many patients are going to Nuoro to undergo radiotherapy because they cannot find a place in Olbia, or alternatively they have to wait four to five months. It is unacceptable that the dismantling of health services is affecting the most fragile sections of the population for which the right to health should be guaranteed», the conclusion.
