A day of mourning will be held tomorrow in Calangianus, on the day of the funeral of Omar Masia, the twenty-five-year-old who died during the night between Saturday and Sunday in a car that crashed off a bridge on the road between Baldu and Agnata, in the Tempio area.
The decision was made by Mayor Fabio Albieri, ahead of the funeral service to be held this afternoon in the Church of Santa Giusta, where a community devastated by the tragedy will gather. Among the first responders to arrive was Massimiliano Masia, a firefighter and the victim's father. He learned what had happened while rushing to the scene with his team.
Meanwhile, investigators are focusing their attention on that bridge. Giovanni Azzena, the lawyer for the young man who was driving the BMW that crashed—five young people were on board returning from a party—has filed a request with prosecutor Sara Martino, the person in charge of the investigation, to conduct a technical assessment of the condition and stability of the bridge's metal barriers, which collapsed and, according to the lawyer, may not have been adequately maintained.
And we also need to understand who was supposed to keep them running smoothly: that stretch of road is owned by the water authority, so management could be the responsibility of the Region or the State.
The investigation also includes the results of the autopsy performed on the young victim's body: while the four friends emerged almost unharmed from the leap into the unknown, with the car remaining crumpled, Omar suffered a violent and fatal blow to the neck that, unfortunately, left him with no chance of survival.
