"We believed in it from the beginning and we will continue to believe in it until the last second." The Minister of Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini , reaffirmed the Italian government's support for Sardinia's candidacy to host the Einstein Telescope , speaking in Lula at the meeting dedicated to the project, with the participation of the Minister of Saxony , Sebastian Gemkow , and the President of the Region, Alessandra Todde .
"We're at an excellent point; the scientific community has followed our lead. I believe the time has come for Europe to build an infrastructure in a region like this and in the Free State of Saxony that will change people's lives ," said Bernini, citing collaboration between Italy and Germany as the key to advancing the project.
The minister underlined that ET does not represent "just a whim for nuclear physicists, astrophysicists, geophysicists and volcanologists", but an investment with implications that go far beyond scientific research .
"It's an instrument, a wonderful telescope that not only sees but also senses," he explained, noting the potential applications of the technologies developed for the infrastructure in the fields of artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, photonics, cryogenics, and high-precision computing.
“We will be doing a lot of advanced mechanics, developing a lot of advanced materials, building a lot of know-how, and transferring technology to make this area more economically advanced in a sustainable way,” he added, indicating environmental, territorial, and energy sustainability as one of the central elements of the project .
Bernini also emphasized the importance of the candidacy for the revitalization of the mining area: "We are breathing new life into a mine that dates back to ancient times." A link between past and future that, according to the minister, can offer new opportunities, especially for younger generations.
"The Region has demonstrated, together with Minister Bernini and the Government, that when you work as a team, results come," says Regional President Alessandra Todde . "This is a Sardinian project in partnership with Saxony; it's a European project. It's a unique opportunity for us," Todde concludes.
"The Einstein Telescope project has made significant progress in recent weeks; these are encouraging developments," said Saxony's Science Minister , Sebastian Gemkow.
Gemkow emphasized that "constant dialogue with partners and collaboration across international borders are crucial to our shared goals. The publication of the report on the infrastructure's geometry configuration has opened up important new perspectives," he recalled. " 200 scientists worked to determine the best configuration, and the results strengthen our belief in the two interferometers, one in Sardinia and one in Lusatia. Thus, with our joint application, we provided the reference model, and Europe has followed suit. Now," Gemkow concluded, "concrete action is needed from Sardinia and Saxony; we must demonstrate that the proposal works, that it is a shared scientific undertaking."
