Sa Domu is closing its doors. After nearly 11 years (the tenth anniversary was celebrated in December 2024) , the occupation of the student housing complex at Via Lamarmora 126, in Cagliari's Castello neighborhood, has come to an end .

Where Matteo Salvini, who had called for the intervention of his "iconic" bulldozer, failed, they hit structural problems that the assembly that self-manages the space has not been able to resolve.

The farewell was communicated with a long note. Here it is.

It's difficult to write a farewell statement, just as it is to withstand the harsh conditions of an occupation that lasted nearly 11 years. It's difficult to put an end to our city's longest-running political struggle. It's difficult to put into words what our eyes have seen, what our hands have touched, what our ears have heard during these long years of activism in space.

We're not leaving because of internal disputes, or because we're threatened by anyone, or because the neighborhood doesn't want us anymore, or because we're afraid of the repressive political climate that's been around for some time.

Unfortunately, since we cannot address the structural problems, we can no longer guarantee the safety of people crossing the Via Lamarmora 126 area.

Despite months of inspections, surveys, and consultations with structural engineers, architects, and engineers, we've realized we're unable to resolve the situation. We don't feel like forcing things further than the final act of abandoning the space that has hosted us for all these years.

We do so without ever considering collaborating with institutions and the like, nor creating ridiculous alliances to the detriment of the Cagliari movement and the new generations who are increasingly gaining prominence on the streets of Cagliari. This mentality, moreover, has characterized our actions since the first day of the occupation.

Since December 12, 2014, we have taken every possible care of a completely abandoned building that, until then, had been managed by the Province of Cagliari (now the metropolitan city). With our work, benefits, and the immense help of all our comrades, both men and women, and those in solidarity in the capital and beyond, we have secured it, rebuilt its key systems, and restored the space to all its splendor, giving the city the most intense and beautiful political seasons in decades.

Over the past year, we've been thrilled to see assemblies, demonstrations, and workouts in the community gym, the launch of the music room, and new collectives emerge and take up residence in the space. Incredible initiatives have come to fruition, such as a ten-day birthday celebration, and we were thrilled to see thousands of people turn out on May Day and at the three-day international Hackmeeting, which was incredibly moving. But there were also plenty of in-depth discussions, seminars, book presentations, poetry slams, and dub sessions.

The management assembly of the space at Via Lamarmora 126 declares the political experience of Sa Domu closed. Anything that happens from now on, inside or outside the space, must not be linked to Sa Domu and its history. With honesty and humility, we place the structure in the hands of the community, to those who wish to care for it. We decline any responsibility for who, what, or how these dear, old four walls will be managed. We would like the name of Sa Domu to be consigned to history, and not associated with or used by any group or individual. No entity will be able to respond on our behalf to this statement or have any say in a part of Cagliari's life, the movement as a whole, which will never be forgotten.

We've already seen the jackals and hyenas on the horizon, ready to feast on the lavish banquet we left behind, those with ties and full purses, ready to speculate on a huge space in the center of our city. We wish them and those who help them the worst.

May a new season of struggle begin, hoping that from a funeral will spring new life and energy for the movement, always convinced of being on the right side of history.

Signed: Management assembly of the occupied space Sa Domu, via Lamarmora 126, Casteddu.
