Cagliari's Piazza degli Arcipelaghi is once again available to the city. The barriers have been removed: after nearly two years (21 months) of work and a total investment of 3 million euros (FCS funds 2014-2020), the redevelopment of the area at the beginning of Poetto has been completed.

The work involved multiple functional and architectural aspects, with the goal of improving the usability, safety, and accessibility of the area, promoting a mobility model that combines respect for the environment and urban quality. New sidewalks of varying widths were created, designed to facilitate the connection between private residences along the waterfront and the road , eliminating differences in level and ensuring easier access for everyone, including those with disabilities and limited mobility.

The interlocking paving, enhanced by colored concrete curbs, blends harmoniously into the existing context and the history of the Poetto seafront. The 3.80-meter-wide lane, reserved for controlled vehicular traffic (with a 30 km/h limited traffic zone), was constructed from colored, draining, eco-friendly concrete . The goal is to reduce speed and increase road safety, thanks to bollards and clear demarcations between the road and the square.

The cycle path in Piazza degli Arcipelago, continuing other projects already implemented by the Municipality of Cagliari, is part of an existing context with a second lane reserved for runners , also 4.30 metres wide, in what was once a dirt area and a no longer operating petrol station.

The pedestrian area, designed to ensure unobstructed mobility, features dedicated paths and access for the disabled, orientation systems for the visually impaired and blind, and protected crossings . Differentiated paving clearly distinguishes the spaces between the urban and coastal areas, contributing to a more accessible and inclusive environment. To encourage relaxation and socialization, new street furniture has been installed, such as wooden and Corten benches, fountains, litter bins, pergolas, and bike racks.

The new green areas, which respect and protect the existing trees, have been enriched with native species and a natural traffic screening system, contributing to the environmental protection of the coastline. A filter ecosystem has also been restored, a sandy embankment that acts as a barrier between the dune area and the pedestrian area, reinforcing the commitment to environmental protection .

The redevelopment of Piazza degli Arcipelago and the Poetto seafront aims to enhance the urban and sustainable development of Cagliari's coast , to continue to offer an accessible, safe and respectful environment.
