Cagliari, forestation of the San Paolo area is underway: 7,000 new plants are on the way
It will become a new urban park available to citizensThe San Paolo area , in Cagliari , will soon become an urban park thanks to 7,000 new plants including olive trees, junipers, mastic trees, brooms, myrtle, ilatro, rosemary, tamarisks and Aleppo pines.
The forestation project - prepared by a multidisciplinary team of professionals which includes a forest technician, an agronomist and a biologist - was carried out by the Metropolitan City with a contribution of 500 thousand euros from the Ministry of Ecological Transition , and was illustrated this morning by the mayor Paolo Truzzu and by the metropolitan councilor responsible for Planning Umberto Ticca.
"The goal is to recover an area that is now highly degraded which represents an access point to the city to transform it into an urban forest that is pleasing to the eye and available to all citizens, and no longer just to the uncivilized" , explained the first citizen adding that over 5 tons of waste were collected during the reclamation.
The affected area, owned by the state (State, Region and Casic), is located between the new Via San Paolo and the Santa Gilla Lagoon, an area of 4.7 hectares with highly degraded natural vegetation.
Work began in June with a preparatory phase of the land, the removal of alien species and waste collection. At the beginning of December, the planting of the plants, currently around 3,000, will be completed in January 2023, together with the irrigation system.
« Fast-growing native plants were chosen to enjoy the benefits of this new green space in a relatively short time, and within two years we will already have shrubs of about two meters, but the area will be available to citizens as early as next year », added Ticca.
