The astronomical calendar marks the official start of the summer season today, and the solstice coincides with the peak of the powerful heat wave currently affecting all of Italy, including Sardinia.

Extreme and anomalous heat from north to south, confirms Federico Brescia of iLMeteo.it, due to the subtropical anticyclone, supported in turn by scorching air coming from Africa. The result is shocking temperature anomalies, with temperatures up to 10 degrees above the typical average for this time of year .

And Sardinia, together with the Po Valley and inland areas of central Italy, is among the most affected areas , with temperatures around 40 degrees.

So much so that the regional Civil Protection Department has issued a severe weather warning starting at 6:00 PM today until 6:00 PM tomorrow, Monday, June 22nd . Highs are expected to exceed 34 degrees Celsius everywhere, often exceeding 37, and in several areas even around 40. Western inland areas will be particularly affected. The hottest areas are Medio Campidano, Marmilla, Oristano, the Ottana plain, and the Ozieri plain . Even at night, lows will not drop below 20-22 degrees Celsius. A slight decrease is expected during the night between Monday the 22nd and Wednesday the 23rd.
