A familiar figure in the Cagliari neighborhoods for his “en plein air” concerts. Franco Becini, a street singer, melodic repertoire, the inseparable guitar, microphone and amplification system to spread his notes, has died. Those songs were the soundtrack of the days of many Cagliaritans for many years. He was 85 years old, he reinterpreted the classics of the melodic tradition with passion and transport. One of his favorite stages was the San Benedetto neighborhood, a welcome and reassuring presence in the urban scene. Franco Becini was also an actor. He recalled his story in the short film “La volpe e l'ape” by director Enrico Pau who also edited the screenplay together with Antonella Iaccarino and Aldo Tanchis (1996). “There was Franco Becini – said Pau during a film festival where the film was shown – to reassure us, his story, his difficult life, his guitar with a metallic sound, his voice, his Neapolitan songs, his “apiscedda”. There was the San Benedetto market, there were the streets of Sant'Elia, places that welcomed us, with warmth. The “metropolitan tale” of Franco, of the last street singer is a metaphor that tells the life of many artists from Cagliari: who lived in a city that never loved its singers too much. We soon discovered that the city itself had become the protagonist of the film: beautiful and sunny, sweet and melancholic at the same time”.
