A recurrence of uterine sarcoma weighing over three kilos in the abdomen was removed from a 56-year-old woman. The highly complex operation was performed on February 10 at Arnas Brotzu in Cagliari by doctors from the Gynecological Oncology unit, directed by Antonio Macciò.

The removed mass, measuring 30 centimeters by 20, completely occupied the abdomen. A few years ago the patient had begun to notice a protuberance in the center of her stomach that over the months had become increasingly larger.

The first excision did not have the desired effect. The patient then turned to Brotzu, where surgery was decided. The large mass extended from the skin to the posterior fascia of the rectus abdominis muscles, infiltrating them completely. A large incision allowed the invasive mass to be identified inside the abdominal cavity, which was removed with extreme technical difficulty, requiring total pelvic evisceration (removal of the bladder, recto-sigmoid) and excision of the entire vagina, completely occupied by a large quantity of neoplastic material.

It was a technically complex operation, both for the excision and for the reconstruction, which required an extensive use of resources and the simultaneous need for the multi-specialist skills of the Brotzu gynecological oncologists.
