The Cagliari City Council has approved the guidelines, proposed by Councilor Yuri Marcialis, for the "Community Benches - 100 New Benches" and "Free Sidewalk - 1.5 Meters of Freedom" programs.
The shared goal of the programs, the Municipality states, "is to improve urban accessibility and pedestrian mobility, with two important and complementary initiatives: the progressive clearing of pedestrian paths and the creation of new spaces accessible to all and useful for different user groups."
The "Community Benches" program plans to install at least 100 new public seats across the city over the next three years and replace or upgrade existing ones. Priority will be given to pedestrian walkways, public transport stops, areas near health and social care services, parks, gardens, seafront promenades, and neighborhoods with limited seating and frequented by the elderly.
The Municipality will take into account citizens' reports, which may highlight the need for new seating or the presence of critical issues with existing benches.
Following unanimous approval by the City Council, the "Marciapiede Libero" program has also been approved by the Executive Committee. The goal is "to ensure ever-increasing accessibility to urban mobility infrastructure, with the sidewalk not being considered, in this sense, a wasteful space: thus, giving back space to pedestrians, eliminating architectural barriers, and reorganizing spaces through the rationalization of existing elements."
Among the first steps, in fact, are the elimination of those no longer necessary, the elimination of duplicate or obsolete road signs, the merging of supports and the increase in the width of the paths.
