Over 1,600 accidents of which 37 were fatal (only 33% occurred on state roads) and a thousand injuries along state and extra-urban roads in 2023, while in 2022 48 fatalities and 2216 accidents. These are the data collected only by the Carabinieri in Sardinia in 2023, provided during the road accidents forum organized by the Attorney General Luigi Patronaggio in which the police commissioner of Cagliari, Paolo Rossi, the commander of the Sardinia Carabinieri Legion Stefano Jasson, the regional commander of the Polstrada, Giovanni Marziano, the commander of the local police of Cagliari, Giambattista Marotto, the commander of the accident section of the Local Police, Nicola Ambrosini and the Commander of the Operations Department of the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Cagliari, Michele Tamponi. The overall toll, which also includes the death reports from Stradale and various local police forces, brings the number of victims on the island's roads to over 100.

According to data provided by the Carabinieri , in Sardinia, the most serious accidents occur on extra-urban roads with a rate of 5 deaths per 100 accidents, while on urban roads, especially due to the lower speed sustained, the mortality rate stops at 1.6 per 100 cases. And in 2022, there were 3,313 road accidents killing 100 people and injuring another 4,557, a 10% increase on the previous year. Most of the accidents are concentrated on Saturday and Sunday, as are the greatest number of injured people. While that of victims was found to have a higher incidence on weekdays.

«This region has experienced dramatic events», the Attorney General said at the opening of the proceedings, «from those boys who lost their lives on Viale Marconi in Cagliari to the director of the Nuoro prison. Thrilling numbers. Cagliari, in particular, suffers from the malamovida that brings young people from all over the province to the city. This forum serves to launch a message of road safety education and awareness."

Patronaggio then illustrated the new package on road rules being studied by parliament which provides for more severe penalties and sanctions for motorists: from a life sentence on the driving license to an alcohol-based device that blocks the car in the event of drunk driving.

On the island, the military fined 505 drunk motorists: in 80 cases the drivers refused to undergo the investigation, having their driving licenses withdrawn in any case.

An insight into the situation in Cagliari was provided by the local police commander Marotto and lieutenant Ambrosini who compared the last ten years of accidents in the city. «The trend is unchanged», highlighted Marotto. «Every day 160 thousand vehicles enter the city», Ambrosini specified, «road accidents increase when there are fewer vehicles in circulation. In fact, we had a peak in the month of August."

«Our tragedy is that of finding ourselves working with dead people on the street or in cars», commented Carabinieri Colonel Michele Tamponi, «we have to reflect on the fact that two or three seconds pass between life and death. The roads where we have found that the most accidents occur are the 131 but also the 196 between Villasor and Villacidro."
