A massacre on the Sardinian roads. The Island is the region with the highest mortality rate for accidents on the asphalt: Istat had certified it , which has now released the data in greater detail.
In 2023, 3,391 road accidents were recorded: 110 people were killed and 4,619 injured. The most critical periods are in the summer. Friday and Saturday evenings are also very dangerous. Compared to 2022, the number of accidents (+2.4%), injuries (+1.4%) and victims (+10%) increased significantly.
Between 2010 and 2023, the Institute of Statistics explains, the incidence of pedestrian deaths has increased significantly; from 10.4% to 14.5%. Crosses, but also economic outlay: in 2023 the cost of accidents was over 450 million euros (286 euros per capita).
Between 2022 and 2023, the injury rate (number of injuries per 100 accidents) will decrease from 137.5 to 136.2, while the mortality rate will increase from 3 to 3.2 deaths per 100 accidents, as will the severity rate.
Accidents mainly on the north-east coast and in the provincial capitals: the critical issues of the State Road 131 are highlighted, along which the highest number of accidents were recorded (207, 5 deaths and 322 injuries), and of the State Roads 125, 130 and 554. The most serious accidents were recorded on the Sp2 of Southern Sardinia. Mortality increased in the provinces of Nuoro, Cagliari and Southern Sardinia while decreasing in the provinces of Sassari and Oristano.
In 2023, the highest number of accidents (1,957, 57.7% of the total) occurred on urban roads, causing 31 deaths (28.2% of the total) and 2,462 injuries (53.3%). Between May and September, 1,582, 46.7% of the accidents occurred during the year: 2,173 people were injured (47.0%) and 56 died (50.9%). The most critical months were July and August, with 10.7% and 10.3% of accidents respectively. 81.7% of accidents occur between 8 am and 9 pm, but the mortality rate reaches its highest values in the time slot between 3 am and 4 am (19 deaths per 100 accidents) and between 5 am and 6 am (18.4 deaths per 100 accidents), values much higher than the daily average.
Friday and Saturday night are the days where 42.7% of night-time accidents, 57.7% of victims and 44.9% of injured people occur . Most road accidents occur between two or more vehicles (65.1%); the most common type of accident is the front-side collision (1,007 cases, 19 victims and 1,496 injured people), followed by the rear-end collision (622 cases, 8 deaths and 959 injured people).
