" I have a well-founded hope that the truth will emerge and that all the mud thrown at us will melt like snow in the sun ."

Cardinal Angelo Becciu writes this in a letter published by the bishop of Ozieri, Monsignor Corrado Melis, in which he justifies his absence at the feast in honor of Santa Sabina.

Absence due to Pope Francis' invitation to participate in the Consistory and the meeting with cardinals from all over the world.

Speaking of the invitation, the cardinal of Pattada, involved in the process on the management of the funds of the Secretariat of State, writes: " The gesture of the Holy Father comforts us and nourishes our trust ".

“Today - continues Becciu - I should have been with you to celebrate our great feast in honor of Saint Sabina and thank the Lord for the 50th anniversary of my priestly ordination. It was August 27, 1972 and since then, with the exception of once or twice, I have never missed an appointment ”.

The reason for the absence "you know", and "I guess you are all happy". "The Holy Father - he claims -, recognizing my right to participate in the Consistory , invited me to take part in it and so I had to come to Rome".

For him it was a "nice surprise", a "grace of the Lord". "I felt embraced by the Church and the day before yesterday in St. Peter's it was moving to see the Pope nod to me from the altar for my presence, as well as to hear the Cardinals welcome me back home, showing me their joy" .

And for the cardinal of Pattada "this is the beauty of the Church, which knows how to go beyond painful events and is able to offer reasons for hope that help overcome the dark moments of life".

Finally, a passage on her devotion to Santa Sabina: “I also turned to her in the last storm that hit me and that painfully involved my family and the diocese itself. You will help us ”.

Signed " your cardinal, Don Angelino ".
