The Sassari Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command, into the fire that last night caused the death of a Sardinian inmate inside the Bancali prison in Sassari.

The man was burned to death in the fire, which he allegedly started himself in a cell in the hospital ward of the penitentiary.

Five Penitentiary Police officers remained slightly

burned and intoxicated and were admitted to the emergency room of the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari.

After the alarm was raised, the firefighters and 118 emergency services intervened on site.

According to initial reconstructions, the inmate lost consciousness due to smoke fumes and was then engulfed in flames, leaving him no escape. From what has been learned, it was not necessary to evacuate the inmates from the facility.
