It was the Delta variant, the one prevalent both in Italy and in the rest of Europe, that infected the pilgrims returning to Sardinia from Medjugorje .

This was announced by the Aou of Sassari after the analysis laboratory of Microbiology and Virology, directed by Professor Salvatore Rubino, sequenced the swabs of positives now hospitalized or in home isolation after the trip to Bosnia.

"We sequenced a dozen swabs, both from hospitalized patients and those now in isolation, - says Rubino - and the result was the same for everyone".
Compared with the sequence database, says the Aou, "the results are the same as some European sequences from Slovakia, Sweden, Luxembourg and other European countries and are not similar to the viruses circulating in Sardinia".
“The strains - explains Rubino - belong to the Delta variant and have no subtypes of interest, such as Delta plus”.
The structure directed by the Sassari teacher is continuing the analyzes with more in-depth studies. The project is part of the regional network for sequencing that involves the Microbiology and Virology laboratories of the Aou Sassari, the Aou of Cagliari and the San Francesco hospital in Nuoro.
