Alberto Scagni, the man who killed his sister Alice on May 1, 2022 under her house in Genoa Quinto, was sentenced to 24 years and six months.

The Court of Assizes, presided over by Judge Massimo Cusatti, deemed him semi-mentally ill, embracing the conclusions of Elvezio Pirfo, the expert of the judge of the preliminary investigations, and of the lawyers Alberto Caselli Lapeschi and Mirko Bettoli. The public prosecutor Paola Crispo had asked for a life sentence, considering him fully capable .

Scagni is accused of voluntary homicide aggravated by premeditation and kinship. The judges also ordered that he remain for at least three years, after prison, in a residence for the implementation of security measures. Furthermore, a provisional amount of 200 thousand euros was awarded to Alice Scagni's two-year-old son, and 100 thousand to the husband and father of the child.

THE REACTIONS – «We are moderately satisfied with the sentence given that most of our arguments were accepted. We will read the reasons and possibly appeal", commented Mirko Bettoli and Alberto Caselli Lapeschi, Alberto Scagni's lawyers. «The defensive system has been largely accepted. The two aggravating circumstances of cruelty and insidious means have been eliminated. The judges understood that Alberto must be educated and re-educated at the end of his sentence because he was recognized as having a serious personality disorder", they concluded.

«The truth was not sought – the comment of the parents, Antonella Zarri and Graziano Scagni - Now let's look at the reasons. We think about what we saw and heard, for us it was not a healthy process. This was a trial against us, in which they didn't want to listen to all the witnesses ." And again: «The prosecutor was afraid that we would talk about the shortcomings of the institutions».

«We will read the reasons and evaluate what to do. A number of aggravating circumstances have been recognised. The important thing is that there is a period of time before he is released for the safety of the child": thus Andrea Vernazza, the lawyer of Gianluca Calzona, Alice Scagni's husband.

THE CRIME – For months Scagni had been arguing with his relatives over his constant requests for money: in a few weeks he had spent the pension fund, of 15 thousand euros , which had been set aside by his parents and had begun to persecute his grandmother and neighbors. That evening of May 1st he stabbed his sister to death, after waiting for hours outside her house.

After the murder, the parents reported the doctor of the ASL3 mental health center and the agents of the operations center who received phone calls from the boy's father on May 1st but did not send the police. The prosecutor's office requested that this case be closed but the parents, through the lawyer Fabio Anselmo, opposed it and a hearing must be set for the discussion.
