An investigation, coordinated by the Carabinieri of the Matera Provincial Command, has been opened by the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Sassi city to clarify the dynamics of the accident that, this afternoon, in Ferrandina (Matera), caused the death of Nicola Pipio, a 29-year-old man. The man was traveling in a Fiat Panda when an oak tree fell on him during a violent storm in the Fonnoni woods picnic area.

Pipio worked for a company in Valbasento, in the province of Matera, and was a manager of his hometown's five-a-side soccer team, the Ferrandina Sport Academy. The young man was spending August 15th with a group of friends. Three other young people in the same car were injured in the accident. The most serious case concerns a 19-year-old woman, who was admitted to the Madonna delle Grazie hospital in Matera. The conditions of the other two young men, aged 23 and 21, are less worrying. The accident occurred during a violent storm in the area, with rain, hail, and strong winds.

"Firefighters arriving on the scene," according to a statement released by the Matera Provincial Command, "found the vehicle crushed by the tree trunk. The first to provide assistance were some bystanders, who managed to extract one person from the vehicle. The Ferrandina firefighters then worked to free the other two trapped occupants, handing them over to the 118 paramedics who arrived on the scene." Pipio, however, died instantly. The Tinchi (Matera) firefighters "supported the operation to help other vehicles stranded due to the mud and bad weather." Due to the bad weather, firefighters also carried out several interventions in other areas of Basilicata.
