« I have known Messina Denaro since we were kids . I bought the house where he lived with his money .'

Andrea Bonafede , surveyor from Campobello di Mazara who "lent" his identity to the boss Messina Denaro, arrested after 30 years on the run, would have said this to the investigators.

He will be sixty in October, nicknamed in the village "long hair" because he started losing his hair from an early age and is now completely bald, Bonafede, the real one, looks nothing like Matteo Messina Denaro, but he is very much a fugitive friend. The two have known each other since they were children, and Matteo Messina Denaro's father , «Don Ciccio», was very close to Andrea's uncle , Leonardo Bonafede, known as Nardo, the mafia boss of Campobello, who died two years ago.

Bonafede, married and separated, with his ex-wife and three children who have lived in northern Italy for some time, over the years has worked at Evergreen srl environmental services , a waste management company in Campobello. But lately, he too had almost become a ghost: home and office , without being seen around too much, even seeing the two sisters Mariella and Angelina very little, apart from a few evening walks with a cigar and a dog.

And so with his "u siccu" documents, just by changing the photo, he has gone on in recent years, as a fugitive, like an ordinary man.

To avoid handcuffs, yesterday Bonafede began to admit something : "I have known Messina Denaro since I was a boy and I bought the house in vicolo San Vito in my name, with 20 thousand euros which he gave me, however ", where the boss has lived in the last year , he explained.

As for the identity card found on Messina Denaro, made out to Andrea Bonafede but with the photo of the boss, a quick search found the original of the request presented in 2016 by Andrea Bonafede himself with two of his photographs in the municipal archive protocolled. And this, according to the police, suggests that the document had been issued regularly by the Municipality , with the replacement of the photo on the identity card only taking place at a later time. However, it remains to be understood who put the stamp of the Municipality on the photo of Messina Denaro.
