It's official: anyone caught driving with a blood alcohol level higher than 0.8 g/l will only be able to get back behind the wheel if their car is equipped with an alcolock, a device that prevents the engine from starting if the driver fails a breath test.

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has signed the implementing decree that establishes the technical characteristics and installation methods of the alcohol lock , one of the key measures of the new Highway Code, in force since 14 December.

The goal is clear: to increase road safety and combat recidivism in drink-driving.

Before starting the vehicle, the driver must take a test using the device. Only if the alcohol level is zero, the engine will start.

According to the decree, the alcohol intercom can be mounted on vehicles intended for the transport of both people and goods. Manufacturers will be required to provide precise instructions for use, maintenance and installation, which must be carried out exclusively by authorized workshops. These, in turn, must affix a special anti-tampering seal.

In case of checks, drivers will have to show both the declaration of installation and a valid calibration certificate of the device. No changes, however, will be required on the single vehicle circulation document.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has announced that it will publish on the official portal of the motorist (www.ilportaledellautomobilista.it) the complete list of authorized installers and the compatibility of the various vehicle models with the different types of alcohol interlocks.
