She collapsed on a sun-baked pavement in Bagheria and never got up again . The scorching heat of this early summer has claimed another victim , this time in the Palermo area: a 53-year-old woman with a heart condition. And after the death yesterday of a worker in San Lazzaro di Savena, the conditions of one of his colleagues in Tezze sul Brenta, in the Vicenza area, are critical. He and another worker fell ill while working in an aluminum tank, saturated with vapors favored by the high temperatures: he is intubated and in a coma. A 66-year-old Asian woman also had a serious risk when she lost consciousness on the terrace of Milan Cathedral and was rushed to the Policlinico.

Heat kills, and turns off cities.

In Florence, right in the center crowded with tourists, between the peak consumption of air conditioners and the overheating of cables, the power went out: offices, homes, hotels and shops in the heart of the city went dark.

Same scene in Bergamo, where the traffic lights also went out . Here Enel explained that the problem concerns the medium voltage line: the cause could be linked to the heat of the last few hours, "which lead to overheating and the expansion of the electrical cables, not to mention the use of air conditioners that overload the network ". This morning the blackout had already affected the historic district of Città Alta, while in the afternoon various areas of the center and the area of the Gewiss stadium.

The scorching sun spares no one on this latest scorching day, with 17 cities on the red dot, to which Campobasso will be added tomorrow . In the meantime, Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Florence, Perugia and Turin have been 'red' since last Thursday, and they are exhausted.

The Regions are currently launching (Sardinia has done so) their ordinances to safeguard those who work in the heat, but tomorrow afternoon Minister Marina Calderone will sign a framework protocol between the Ministry of Labor, businesses and unions for the "adoption of measures to contain work-related risks related to climate emergencies in the workplace", with protections on working hours, health surveillance, the provision of appropriate clothing and social safety nets for the most affected sectors.
