The first Registry for the recognition of the gender of election dedicated to transgender people arrives in Milan.

This was established by the City Council which approved the motion proposed by the councilor of the Democratic Party, Monica Romano , the first transgender woman elected in the city. Transgender people in Italy "live in a legal limbo with documents that are completely inconsistent with the external appearance and social identity - the document reads -, keeping the personal name and sex of origin on all identification documents ".

The Registry will allow transgender Milanese citizens "to have identification documents under the jurisdiction of the Municipality (ATM subscription, library cards, badges and corporate identification documents for employees of the Municipality of Milan and of the investee companies) bearing the name of their choice and no longer the personal name. "The approved motion also provides" measures to make effective the right to vote of transgender people who - due to the problem of polling stations divided by gender - often desert the polls to avoid situations of embarrassment. From now on, to obtain the documents with the chosen name, it will therefore be sufficient for transgender citizens to make a declaration in front of a registrar ”.

"This is a historic victory because it is the first gender register established in Italy in which these people will not be asked for frustrating psychiatric expertise but there will be the possibility of self-determination - commented Monica Romano -. I hope this can be a goad. for national politics so that it becomes active since we have been waiting for a law for the right of citizenship for 40 years. Even the employees of the transgender municipality will finally be able to have the badge with their elective name ". With Atm, the company that manages public transport in Milan "we have already talked and they proved immediately available", he concluded.
