The 14-year-old was injured yesterday together with a 15-year-old in the explosion in a fireworks factory in Ispica, Sicily.

The boy is still in danger of his life.

The very young man, who arrived at the hospital by helicopter, was subjected to surgery for trauma to an arm, eye and maxillofacial trauma by a team of neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, general surgery doctors and orthopedists.

The other boy injured along with him, a 15-year-old, is in stable condition after undergoing surgery for shrapnel wounds. The 15-year-old is currently hospitalized in the pediatric surgery department in the Catania Polyclinic.

The accident yesterday afternoon in the Moltisanti factory, the scene in 1999 of a violent outbreak, without injuries, generated by pyrotechnic material stored in the warehouses. Nine years ago, a second explosion, again without injuries, led to the decision to close the factory that had been abandoned. But obviously without securing the area properly.

Yesterday, according to the first reconstructions, the boys were playing in the area, when they found gunpowder inside the deposits and started the fire. From there the tremendous explosion, a roar also felt in the center of Ispica.

The two teenagers, who managed to save themselves after the explosion, would have given the alarm to the firefighters.
