"He was making fun of me for my Calabrian accent." This is how Cristian Maffia, a 33-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder for stabbing Aldo Marra, a carpenter employed at a company in Cantù, with two stab wounds—one in the shoulder and one fatally in the stomach—allegedly justified himself to the Carabinieri who arrested him. The 55-year-old died shortly after being admitted to the Sant'Anna Hospital in Como.
The attack occurred in the town in the province of Como, outside the Bivio bar on Via Montello, in the hamlet of Vighizzolo. It was the culmination of an argument, the reconstruction of which is based on multiple eyewitness accounts, which the Carabinieri are currently working on. The argument apparently began in the early afternoon inside the bar and then continued outside, likely sparked by very trivial motives, perhaps related to a taunt about Maffia's accent—a detail yet to be verified—then certainly to a word too many. It appears that Maffia, known for a drug-related criminal record, was harassing customers and the manager, and that Marra asked him to leave, then followed him to make sure he actually left. At that point, the younger of the two men allegedly pulled out his knife.
Married, the father of two, and employed at Tabu—a well-known company in the Cantù wood furniture sector—Marra was well-known in the town, especially for his work as a coach and assistant to the Oratory of San Michele soccer team. It appears that Maffia had left his home already armed, with the knife in his pocket. He allegedly justified his actions to the Carabinieri by claiming he had brought it with him out of fear of running into an acquaintance to whom he owed a few hundred euros, and who would undoubtedly demand his money back.
