The world population has exceeded 8 billion inhabitants.

The official estimate was given by the United Nations , which hails the goal as "an important milestone in human development".

The announcement was made during Cop27 , the international conference on climate change underway in Egypt, in Sharm el-Sheikh. This is because the awareness of there being so many in the world must be accompanied, underlines the UN, by the "shared responsibility to take care of our planet".

For the United Nations, "this unprecedented growth (in 1950 there were "only" 2.5 billion inhabitants, ed.) is the result of a gradual increase in life expectancy thanks to progress in public health, nutrition, 'hygiene and medicine'.

But, the UN points out, this growth in population poses at the same time "significant challenges to the poorest countries".
